Cracks Appear in Comstock Monument

Hello again dear reader,

As so many barriers to the maintenance of women’s health are falling it is with great pleasure that this writer announces the latest crack appearing in the stony legacy of Anthony Comstock.

In the interest of preserving the family, this scholarly gentleman made it his life’s mission to rid the world of vice, smut, and anything he deemed obscene. Comstock claimed that his efforts were all in interest of saving the children.

Why, dear reader, do nut jobs always cite the children?

In doing so he ensured that American women were unable to get information on birth control and could only purchase contraceptive devices from their doctors for “the prevention of disease only.”

This writer is certain that the thousands of little boys who were saved from blindness by the never being exposed to pornography completely outweighs the emotional, physical, and economic strains that unwanted children had on women and society for years to come.

This week though we have taken a step towards putting another chink in Comstock’s acropolis. Drug companies, advocates, and lawmakers are working together to make contraceptive medications available over the counter as opposed to by prescription only.

Now, nearly 150 years after Comstock began his war against women having control of their own bodies his tower is beginning to crumble and lean. And hopefully, soon, it will come crashing down all together.
