How Far Have We Come To Go Backwards? --- WE WON!!!!

In the vein of how fare we have come and how far we need to go here is a modern story that could have been written at any time in the last 200 years.

This writer sits here in her modern apartment in Ireland and gapes at the slogans that plaster the light poles outside her window. For anyone not in the know, Ireland is holding a voting referendum on abortion.

Yes, you read that correctly.

A modern country still holds abortion illegal in ALL cases. Not even to save the life of the mother may a pregnancy be terminated. Even if the death of the mother will result in the inevitable death of the baby as well. Even then the sanctity of the womb, like that of the confessional, cannot be breached.

On another topic this writer was looking back over headlines from the 1920s, a time when women began to truly come into their own and experience true ownership over their bodies…all parts of them. This writer was shocked at the painful similarities between the arguments against women’s authority from 100 years ago and this afternoon.

As always this writer cannot understand the reasoning why people think that they have the right to dictate what another person does with their body. Both men and women protesting on the streets claim to know what is better for this writer to do with her womb.

All that this writer can do is to reach out to her voting sisterhood (and brethren) with the plea to go out and vote. Vote to allow women to control the fate of their bodies and to ensure that a future generation of unwanted, neglected children is not forced into the world.

And please, dear reader, remember that furthering the ban on abortion does not mean that there will not be abortions. A continuing ban on abortions will only ensure that there will be unsafe, underground abortions and that more and more women will die as a result.
